- Neptune is the 8th planet in the Solar System, and the furthest from Earth’s sun.
Light reflected off Neptune’s surface takes 4 hours, 20 minutes to reach Earth.
- The larger of the two ‘ice giants’, Neptune has a thick blue atmosphere of
hydrogen (80%) and helium (19%). Beneath its icy mantle, astronomers and physicists suspect that
metre-wide diamonds rain down on a core of molten rock.
- The planet Neptune takes its name from the Roman god of the sea, the equivalent
of the Greek god Poseidon. Nymphs, monsters, and other deities of the wine-dark Greek
sea lend their names to its 14 moons.
- More than 80% of Earth’s oceans remain unexplored, unmapped, and unprotected.
Like its heavenly brother, Neptune’s terrestrial domain is a mythical place – one of imagined
terrors and swashbuckling legends.
- Together, let’s explore our depths and our destinies, telling stories about the
mysteries of our shared universe.
On Neptune, you'll find...
